HWS 220 Class Triathlon: Results, Livestream, Photos, and Media Coverage
Students in Binghamton University’s HWS 220 Triathlon Training course completed their class triathlon on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Binghamton University West Gym in Vestal, New York. The event served as a semester-ending experience for students in Health and Wellness Studies under the Decker School of Health Sciences.
Throughout the semester, students learned and applied concepts connected to triathlon training, exercise science, nutrition, lifestyle change, behavior modification, endurance, pacing, transitions, and personal wellness. Race day gave students the chance to put that work into action through a 500-yard swim, 12-mile bike, and 2.8-mile run.
Race Day Recap
The HWS 220 Class Triathlon brought together 24 students for a culminating race-day experience that reflected a full semester of training, learning, and personal growth. Twenty-three students completed the race-day event, while Trevor was unable to participate because he was traveling after qualifying for nationals in lacrosse the weekend before. Congratulations to Trevor on that accomplishment as well.
Students began with a 500-yard swim in the Binghamton University West Gym pool, moved into a 12-mile bike segment on spin bikes, and finished with a 2.8-mile run around campus. The event was organized into three heats, beginning with the women’s heat at 1:30 p.m., followed by men’s heats at 2:00 p.m. and 2:20 p.m.
Race day was more than a timed event. It was a chance for students to apply what they had studied throughout the semester, including triathlon training, exercise science, nutrition, lifestyle change, behavior modification, endurance, pacing, transitions, and personal wellness.
The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was supportive and energetic. Classmates cheered from the pool deck, volunteers helped count laps and record times, families followed along through the livestream, and students celebrated each other from the first swim start to the final finish.
Congratulations to all HWS 220 students who trained, participated, volunteered, supported classmates, and helped make the class triathlon a memorable semester-ending experience for Binghamton University Health and Wellness Studies.
Student Voices & Livestream Moments
One of the best parts of the HWS 220 Class Triathlon was the energy captured through the livestream. Chloe Dilane helped bring viewers into the race-day experience by interviewing students before, during, and after the event while also checking in with volunteers, spectators, and classmates throughout the afternoon.
Before the first heat began, students were warming up in the West Gym pool and getting ready for the 500-yard swim. Some students shared that they were excited, while others were clearly feeling the normal nerves that come before a race. That mix of excitement, uncertainty, and confidence helped show what the class triathlon was really about: students stepping into a challenge and supporting each other through it.
The livestream also highlighted the volunteer effort behind the event. Students and helpers assisted with lap counting, timing, transitions, athlete check-ins, and general race-day support. From the pool deck to the bike room to the finish area, the event depended on classmates, friends, and volunteers working together to keep each heat moving.
As the first swimmers started, Chloe helped viewers follow the race in real time, pointing out athletes in the lanes, checking in on the bike room, and encouraging family members watching online to comment if they wanted close-ups or updates on specific students. That interaction made the livestream feel less like a broadcast and more like the class community opening the event up to parents, friends, and supporters who could not be there in person.
During the bike portion, students moved from the pool to spin bikes and settled into the 12-mile ride. The livestream captured the middle of the race well: students working hard, checking mileage, taking in water or electrolytes, and pushing through the longer endurance segment before heading out for the run.
The finish area brought out the best reactions of the day. Students came in tired, proud, relieved, and excited. In one post-race interview, a student summed up the feeling simply: tired, but proud to have completed a triathlon. Another joked about needing to recover quickly before getting back to schoolwork, which felt like a very real college-student ending to a major endurance effort.
More than anything, the livestream showed how much the class had bonded throughout the semester. Students cheered for one another, tracked friends on the course, helped with gear, celebrated finishes, and stayed involved even when they were not racing. That support was one of the strongest parts of the day and helped make the HWS 220 Class Triathlon feel like a shared accomplishment for the entire class.
