Mount to Coast C1, R1, P1, H1, T1 and R1R: Which Family Fits Your Run?
Start with the surface you run on and the session you want to do. Mount to Coast's model letters separate different jobs. C1, R1 and P1 are road choices. H1 spans pavement and light trail. T1 adds a more trail-focused outsole. R1R changes the R1 outsole construction.
Compare the six families
| Family | Starting point | Drop | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | Daily road training | 6 mm | 42 mm heel and a two-layer midsole |
| R1 | Long road runs | 8 mm | 35 mm heel with a CPU outsole |
| P1 | Guided road training | 10 mm | 3D Archrail support |
| H1 | Mixed-surface runs | 6 mm | VersaGrip with 2 mm lugs |
| T1 | Technical trails | 4 mm | Vibram outsole with 4 mm lugs |
| R1R | Road running | 8 mm | Rubber outsole instead of CPU |
Cushioning and support answer different questions
C1 gives you the higher-stack road option in this comparison. Its CircleCELL layer sits above rubberized EVA. P1 takes a different approach, pairing LightCELL with the brand's Archrail structure. Compare both on your feet rather than treating the taller shoe as the more supportive choice.
H1 or T1 for a mixed route?
Choose your starting point by the most demanding surface. H1 combines shallow tread with a road-to-trail design. T1 uses deeper lugs and a Vibram outsole. For a route beginning on pavement before reaching gravel and light trails, try H1 first. For a more technical trail outing, compare T1. These are fitting recommendations, not traction guarantees for every condition.
R1 and R1R stay separate
R1 uses CPU underfoot. R1R uses rubber. Mount to Coast lists reference weights of 240 g and 256 g respectively in men's US 9. The brand also describes less outsole noise for R1R. Compare the exact construction rather than treating the name as a color change.
How to try the lacing
On a dual-zone model, set the forefoot tension first, then secure the midfoot. Walk, jog and make a gentle turn. Check heel movement and toe clearance. Tightening every lace to solve one loose area is a useful signal to reassess fit. P1 uses traditional lacing, so its adjustment differs.
Before a long outing
Use the socks you expect to wear. Check both feet. Build experience with your chosen pair before a key event, and note pressure points during shorter outings. This guide uses manufacturer specifications and editorial fitting guidance. It does not represent a staff wear test.
