Why this shoe still matters
The adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 is an aggressive road-racing shoe for runners targeting fast efforts from shorter road races through the marathon. Rather than treating an older model as obsolete, it is worth looking at what you get: two layers of LIGHTSTRIKE PRO cushioning, carbon-infused ENERGYRODS 2.0, a reshaped rocker and an outsole that pairs lightweight LIGHTTRAXION with Continental rubber at toe-off.
The Pro 5 has since arrived, but the Pro 4 remains a legitimate race-day choice, especially for runners who already know its fit and like a lively forefoot. The lower price does not make it the right fit for everyone. Its narrower midfoot and less forgiving platform deserve attention.

The technology, without the hype
LIGHTSTRIKE PRO
A dual-layer performance foam setup gives the shoe its responsive, highly cushioned underfoot character. The foam works with the rocker, not by itself, to shape the ride.
Carbon-infused ENERGYRODS 2.0
Lengthwise rods follow the forefoot and add stiffness to support a fast, rolling transition. They do not guarantee a faster time for every runner.
LIGHTTRAXION + Continental rubber
A lightweight outsole layout saves material while Continental rubber reinforces the toe-off area. Traction performance still depends on the surface and conditions.
Micro Fit upper, LIGHTLOCK & heel hold
Thin, closely fitting materials and a secure lacing/heel layout favor race-day lockdown. Try the shoe with your race socks if you are between sizes or sensitive to midfoot pressure.

Fit and feel: who should try it?
The Pro 4 has a snug race fit, especially through the arch. The upper is lower volume than some traditional trainers. Independent testing identifies limited stability through the midfoot cutout, so runners who need substantial guidance or have sensitive arches should not buy on price alone. Length often tests true to size, but the shape feels different from the Adios Pro 3. Compare in person if you have the option.
Good match
Neutral runners who like a rockered racing feel, want a carbon-rod racer for speedwork or races, and have already confirmed the fit.
Think twice
Runners wanting a wide or relaxed midfoot, a high-stability daily shoe, or an all-purpose walking shoe. A high-performance racer is not automatically a better everyday option.
Adios Pro 3 vs Pro 4 vs Pro 5
| Model | What changed |
|---|---|
| Pro 3 | Earlier geometry and roomier-feeling upper for some runners; independent testers found slightly more stability. |
| Pro 4 | Lighter, updated foam and rocker, closer race fit, responsive ride. Clearance makes it a price-conscious racing option. |
| Pro 5 | Newer, lighter design with a more forgiving midfoot platform in independent testing; offered separately at current-model pricing. |
Comparison reflects design differences and independent testing, not a promise of performance for any particular athlete.
Where we'd run it
We would put this shoe to work on smooth road-race courses and controlled marathon-pace workouts: the Binghamton West Side roads, road-race preparation near Corning, paved routes in the Hudson Valley, firm roads near Watertown, and Lake Placid road sessions when the surface is clear. On snow, trails or slippery corners, choose shoes designed for those conditions.
Race-day questions
Can I train every day in the Adios Pro 4?
You can run workouts in it, but its purpose-built racing fit and geometry make it different from a conventional daily trainer. Many runners reserve racing shoes for workouts and events.
Is the Pro 4 good for a first marathon?
The distance alone does not decide. If the fit works and you have tested the shoe on long runs, it is an option. Do not debut a new race shoe on marathon morning.
Is the clearance shoe a different version?
No. These listings are for the Adizero Adios Pro 4. Colors and available sizes differ by listing. Check the variant shown before checkout.
How do I choose between Pro 4 and Pro 5?
Prioritize fit, stability needs and the ride you prefer. The Pro 4 offers a discounted option; the Pro 5 offers a newer design with a different feel.
